Tree & Shrub Program

Tree & Shrub Health

Bushes and trees in landscapes across New Jersey seem to be one of the most neglected items in the lawn and landscape. We believe that is because they are some of the hardiest and most resilient plants on your property, therefore most people don’t consider everything necessary for them to truly be healthy and grow to their full potential.

And more importantly depending on the shrubs and trees you have they will likely need health services at different times of the year. That is where our Tree & Shrub Program steps in to give your landscape everything it needs to look its best throughout the year.

Our Tree & Shrub Program consists of 7 applications throughout the year that take care of everything from fertilization, insect control, disease control and fungus control.

With this program we recommend starting with a soil test as it provides valuable insights and allows us to customize your tree and shrub health program.

Our program focuses on preventing problems instead of reacting to problems with your trees and shrubs. We take care of everything from fertilization, insect and mite control, disease control, anti-desiccant treatments and merit injections.

As with all our services we guarantee you will love our services, so if you are ever not satisfied or have questions about your tree and shrub service just let us know and we will make it right.

Soil testing for flowerbeds with trees and shrubs is a crucial step in ensuring the health and vitality of your plants. By identifying nutrient deficiencies, pH imbalances, and specific soil needs, we can tailor your fertilization and amendment practices to support optimal growth.

This not only leads to healthier, more resilient plants but also helps prevent diseases and pests, ensuring your flowerbeds remain vibrant and thriving for years to come.

  • Nutrient Balance: Soil testing identifies nutrient deficiencies or imbalances, ensuring your trees and shrubs receive the necessary nutrients for optimal growth.

  • pH Level: The pH level of soil affects nutrient availability. Testing helps determine if the soil is too acidic or alkaline, allowing for adjustments to create a suitable environment for plant health.

  • Improved Growth: By understanding the specific needs of your soil, we can tailor fertilization and amendment practices, leading to healthier and more robust trees and shrubs.

  • Disease Prevention: Proper nutrient levels and pH balance can help prevent diseases and pests, which often target stressed or nutrient-deficient plants.

  • Efficient Fertilization: Soil testing allows for precise application of fertilizers and soil amendments, preventing over-fertilization, which can harm plants and the environment.

  • Environmental Protection: Testing helps prevent runoff of excess fertilizers into waterways, protecting local ecosystems and reducing pollution.

  • Customized Care: Different plants have unique soil requirements. Testing provides specific information to meet the needs of each tree and shrub species in your flowerbed.

  • Long-term Soil Health: Regular soil testing promotes sustainable landscaping practices, maintaining soil health over time and ensuring a thriving landscape year after year.

Because everyone's landscape is different providing a price for our tree and shrub health program requires an evaluation of your property to determine the types and quantity of trees and shrubs to be treated.

We typically do an onsite evaluation of your property and provide pricing at that time.

We fertilize your trees and shrubs as part of our Tree & Shrub Program. This consists of multiple fertilizer applications throughout the year. By having multiple fertilizer applications allows your landscapes plants to have consistent availability to the nutrients it needs to thrive throughout the year.

We use high quality fertilizers that are applied in the appropriate manner for each specific plant species. This may include a deep root injection, granular or liquid applications of fertilizer.

Proper fertilization also helps reduce fungus and insect infections and infestations on your plants as they tend to attack weaker plants.

Disease and Insect Control is an important part of maintaining a healthy landscape. Unlike your lawn that can get a blanket treatment to correct these problems your plants are a little more complex. They require identifying the type of pest or fungus and then applying the appropriate solution to resolve that problem. When it comes to disease and insect control our goal is always prevention by maintaining a healthy plant, however if we identify any pest or disease damage we will make the corrective treatments as they become necessary.

It also important to understand that there are some diseases specifically that can't be treated with chemicals in which case we would recommend removal of the plant. Some of the more common ones would be wood-decaying fungi and root diseases.

Anti-Desiccant Treatments for Trees and Shrubs

Anti-desiccant treatments are essential for protecting trees and shrubs, particularly during harsh winter months. These treatments involve applying a protective coating to the foliage, reducing moisture loss and preventing winter damage. Here’s why anti-desiccant treatments are beneficial:

  1. Moisture Retention: Anti-desiccants form a barrier on the leaves and needles, reducing water loss through transpiration. This is crucial during winter when the ground is frozen, and plants cannot uptake water effectively.

  2. Winter Protection: During winter, cold winds and dry air can cause significant moisture loss from evergreen plants, leading to desiccation and browning. Anti-desiccants help shield plants from these harsh conditions.

  3. Stress Reduction: By minimizing water loss, anti-desiccants reduce the overall stress on trees and shrubs, helping them maintain better health and vigor throughout the winter.

  4. Enhanced Survival Rates: Newly planted or transplanted trees and shrubs are particularly vulnerable to desiccation. Anti-desiccant treatments can increase their chances of surviving and thriving in their new environment.

  5. Protection Against Salt Damage: In areas where road salt is used, anti-desiccants can provide a protective layer that reduces salt absorption and minimizes damage to the plants.

  6. Longevity of Evergreens: Evergreens retain their foliage year-round, making them susceptible to winter desiccation. Anti-desiccants help ensure these plants remain green and healthy through the winter months.

  7. Aesthetic Appeal: Preventing winter browning and foliage damage helps maintain the aesthetic appeal of your landscape, keeping it attractive even during the colder seasons.

Merit Injections for Tree and Shrub Health

Merit injections are an effective treatment for protecting trees and shrubs from a wide range of pests. Merit, a brand name for the systemic insecticide imidacloprid, is delivered directly into the vascular system of the plants through trunk or soil injections. Here’s why Merit injections are beneficial:

  1. Systemic Protection: Once injected, Merit is absorbed and transported throughout the tree or shrub, providing long-lasting protection against pests such as aphids, borers, Japanese beetles, and leafhoppers.

  2. Targeted Application: Merit injections allow for precise application directly into the plant’s system, reducing the risk of pesticide drift and minimizing impact on non-target organisms and beneficial insects.

  3. Efficient Pest Control: Merit effectively controls a variety of common and destructive pests that can cause significant damage to trees and shrubs. This ensures the health and longevity of your plants.

  4. Seasonal Defense: Merit injections offer extended protection, often lasting a full growing season. This reduces the need for frequent treatments and ensures consistent defense against pests.

  5. Environmentally Friendly: Compared to traditional spraying methods, injections minimize the release of chemicals into the environment, making them a more eco-friendly option.

  6. Promotes Plant Health: By protecting against pest infestations, Merit injections help maintain the overall health and vigor of trees and shrubs, allowing them to grow stronger and more resilient.
